Songwriting Prompt Templates
AI prompt templates for songwriting. Write lyrics, develop melodies, and create songs.
Overview
Songwriting prompts help you write lyrics, develop song structures, and break through creative blocks. Whether you're crafting verses for a personal project or writing music professionally, these templates push you toward more vivid imagery, tighter rhyme schemes, and emotional honesty. They're especially useful when you have a melody but can't find the words, or when your lyrics feel generic.
Best Practices
Specify the emotion before the topic. 'A sad song about breakup' gives you clichés. 'A song about the relief of finally ending something that should have ended years ago' gives you something real.
Include your musical constraints. Syllable counts, rhyme schemes, and verse lengths matter. AI can write to fit if you tell it what fits.
Give examples of artists whose style you're aiming for. Not to copy, but to set the vocabulary and imagery expectations.
Work in sections. Get the chorus right before worrying about verses. Nail the hook before building around it.
Don't ask for finished songs. Ask for options, variations, and fragments you can piece together.
Prompt Templates
1. Emotional Hook Generator
Generate 10 potential song hooks (memorable phrases or lines that could be a chorus centerpiece) about [EMOTION/THEME]. The style should fit [GENRE]. Each hook should be under 10 words and have natural rhythm when spoken aloud. For the 3 strongest, suggest what the verses might explore.
Emotion/theme: The anxiety of waiting for someone to text back, but making it feel universal rather than petty. Genre: Indie pop with folk influences.
1. 'Every minute is a door that won't open' 2. 'I'm fluent in the language of blue light' 3. 'Three dots and a prayer' - Verses could explore: the rituals of checking, what you rehearse saying, the moment you give up and they finally respond...
When you need a central idea strong enough to build an entire song around
- •Hooks work best when they're specific enough to feel true but vague enough to apply broadly
- •Test hooks by singing them to a simple melody. If they don't flow, keep looking.
2. Verse Builder with Constraints
Write a verse for a [GENRE] song about [TOPIC]. Constraints: [NUMBER] lines, roughly [SYLLABLE COUNT] syllables per line, rhyme scheme [PATTERN like ABAB or AABB]. The tone is [TONE]. Avoid clichés about [COMMON CLICHÉS TO SKIP]. Give me 3 different versions with different imagery.
Genre: Country. Topic: Missing home while on tour. 4 lines, 8-10 syllables each, ABAB rhyme scheme. Tone: Nostalgic but not mopey. Avoid clichés: dirt roads, mama's cooking, porch swings.
VERSION 1: 'These hotel ceilings all look the same / I count the cracks like counting sheep / My phone says home but it's just a name / For the only place I ever sleep...' VERSION 2: 'Six hundred miles from my mailbox key / From the dog who forgets me every time...'
When you need lyrics that fit specific musical requirements
- •Syllable counts don't need to be exact if the emphasis falls naturally
- •Ask for near-rhymes and slant-rhymes if perfect rhymes sound forced
3. Bridge Breakthrough
My song has these elements: Verse theme is [VERSE CONTENT], chorus is [CHORUS CONTENT]. I need a bridge that [BRIDGE FUNCTION: shifts perspective/reveals new information/builds to final chorus/provides contrast]. Write 3 bridge options, each 4-6 lines, that accomplish this while adding something the song is missing.
Verse theme: describing a relationship where both people are pretending everything's fine. Chorus: 'We're dancing on a cracked floor' (metaphor for ignoring problems). Bridge function: the moment one person almost says the truth but doesn't.
BRIDGE 1: 'Last Tuesday you started a sentence / With my full name like a warning sign / And I held my breath for the ending / But you just asked me to pass the wine / We're so good at changing the subject / We could teach a masterclass in fine'...
When your song structure is solid but the bridge feels like filler
- •Bridges work best when they go somewhere the verse and chorus can't
- •A bridge that asks a question the final chorus answers creates momentum
4. Imagery Upgrade
Here are my current lyrics: [PASTE LYRICS]. Identify the 3 weakest images or most generic phrases. For each, give me 5 more vivid, specific alternatives that keep the meaning but add originality. Explain what makes each replacement stronger.
Lyrics: 'You broke my heart in two / Now I'm feeling so blue / Every night I cry / Wondering why, why, why'
WEAK PHRASE 1: 'broke my heart in two' - Generic, expected. ALTERNATIVES: 'left a crater where the good parts were' (physical, specific damage), 'folded me like a letter you never sent' (implies being discarded with intention), 'rewired what I thought was permanent'...
When your lyrics work structurally but feel like things you've heard before
- •Physical, concrete images almost always beat abstract emotions
- •Unexpected verbs do more work than adjectives
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Writing lyrics that read well but don't sing well. Always test against melody, even a rough one. Clustered consonants and awkward emphasis ruin otherwise good lines.
Being too literal. Songs work through suggestion and imagery. You don't need to explain every emotion directly.
Forcing rhymes at the expense of meaning. A near-rhyme that says something true beats a perfect rhyme that says nothing.
